Schloss Neidstein…the real one. We discovered that it was in the next town over from the “Schloss Big Red Barn.” So, once more we headed out to go see a castle…
The view from the road…we searched for a good 30 minutes before we finally found the right road. The area is heavily wooded so if you turned the wrong direction you could no longer see the castle towers.
When we finally found the right road we had to park at the bottom of a hill and walk up to the top. The walk was beautiful…the forested area was peaceful and calm…it reminded me of the kind of forest you might find in a fairy tale. At any moment I expected a knight in shining armor to whisk me up onto his horse so I no longer had to race through the forest at a “leave the mosquitoes behind” pace.
Waalaah…the road to Schloss Neidstein...
When we got to the top we were disappointed once again. Because this castle has occupants. I wonder if they are just some rich people or if they are descended from royal blood. This castle in particular, if you remember, was owned by Nicolas Cage until this past April. I’m guessing that it was just some rich people that thought living in a castle in Germany would be cool.
Granted…I think living in a castle in Germany would be cool. The owners had blocked off pretty much all access to anything but the outside gate. We tried to walk around the side wall to see a little more of it, but the path was covered in stinging nettles so we gave up after a short ¼ mile hike.
Even though we could only really see what was through these gates we thought it looked amazingly beautiful. Well, at least John and I did. The kids thought this castle was boring too…we promised them we’d actually make it to a castle they could walk through…someday…
Bella’s first castle that actually looked like a castle.
